The Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau is a nonprofit corporation that was founded in 1912. Its mission is to improve the marketplace by increasing trust and consumer confidence. Today, it has 97 independently incorporated local businesses that are members. The Better Business Bureau has an online database of businesses that consumers can search. The profiles contain basic company information, as well as a dispute resolution system. On average, about 3/4 of the disputes filed with the organization are resolved. The BBB does not endorse any particular business, but does help consumers find reputable and credible companies.

The BBB is independent, nonprofit, and supported by fees paid by its members. Although the bureau has no legal authority to force businesses to fix negative business practices, it can be a good resource to learn about unsavory business practices. Its founder is retired corporate executive and investment advisor Michael R. Lewis, a retired corporate lifestylemission executive and investment advisor from Texas. He has more than 40 years of business experience. He earned his BBA in industrial management from the University of Texas at Austin.

The BBB is comprised of local chapters in the United States and Canada. Its members include retailers, manufacturers, advertising agencies, and media representatives. In total, nearly 300 national corporations and more than 100,000 local businesses are members of the organization. The organization has 150 branches in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada, and is governed by the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

Consumers can submit complaints to the BBB by filling out a form on their website. The BBB will review the complaint and forward it to the getliker business. If the business does not respond, the BBB will create a file about the business. If the business still refuses to respond, the file will be public and may be passed on to law enforcement.

The BBB uses a scoring system to rate businesses. The bureau gives a business an A+ or F rating based on 16 factors. Businesses that have more than four years of business receive a higher rating. Additionally, companies can earn accreditation from the BBB if they meet the requirements. Businesses with an “F” rating will usually advertise their accreditation status.

Businesses that become BBB accredited will receive a logo and listing in the Bureau’s online directory. Accredited companies will pay a ventsmagazine annual fee to become members. This fee can range from a few hundred dollars to more than ten thousand dollars. Membership dues vary depending on the size of the organization.
